They were introduced to basic set-ups of observational drawing such as Still-life and sculptures of human forms.

Outdoor sketchings were conducted at Botanic Garden and Singapore Expo on subjects of Nature/Garden and Architecture.

Students' finalwork were conceptualised and imaginatively composed with narratives in mind appropriating and stylising from Surrealist and Fantasy Art.

The Story of Yeh Chi Wei

This is a visual story of an almost forgotten artist: Yeh Chi Wei. He was a Singaporean artist, a well-respected art educator and leader in Singapore’s 20th century art scene. He led the Ten Men Group on painting exhibitions to Southeast Asian countries and was a great source of inspiration and encouragement to many other artists. Many consider him to be a true Nanyang artist. This exhibition showcases Yeh’s artistic achievements, contributions to Singapore, and celebration of Southeast Asia through art.

Choy Ka Fai

The Lan Fang Chronicles

The Lan Fang Chronicles project is inspired by investigations into the histories of the Lan Fang Republic (1777 to 1884). Established by the Hakka Chinese in West Kalimantan, the Republic lasted for 107 years before it disintegrated into nothing but a legend to its living descendents.
This project looks at the concept of insignificant histories and its parallels with the history of modern Singapore. This research-based work will culminate in a series of visual art, theatre and film presentations.

Choy Ka Fai is a new media artist, performer, theatre and film director. Formerly Associate Artistic Director of TheatreWorks (Singapore), Choy is a recipient of the National Arts Council Arts Creation Fund 2009, which has enabled the research and development of his new artistic project, The Lang Fang Chronicles.

This is a retrospective exhibition on Vincent Leow's work spanning over two decades of art practice in various Artforms and media. He is a prolific local artist who continues to explore various societal issues.

'The title Tags and Treats refers both to pet identity tags, as well as military dog tags that are often used to identify the dead or wounded in war. The military dog tag is a reference to Leow’s inspiration for his new works, the Latin phrase Memento Mori (remember you will die), while the pet tag is a remembrance of Andy, his beloved late pet, which he transforms into a hybrid dog-manimage in his work. Leow, in his trademark whimsical style, uses the allegory of pets to take the severity out of the grim issue of mortality. The “treat” of a life well-lived is that of one’s legacy remembered and left behind. The exhibition, with its explorations, marks a milestone of a new direction and focus in Leow’s artistic practice.'

In 2008, Chinese artist Wu Guanzhong donated 113 of his important works to the National Heritage Board, Singapore. This is the highest-value donation ever given to a public museum institution in Singapore. An internationally eminent artist, Wu is best known for marrying the distinct art form of traditional Chinese ink with modern concepts in Western art.

- Ramayana Revisited: A Tale of Love & Adventure

The exhibition is about the universal and timeless popularity of the Ramayana epic and its narration in visual, performing and literary arts of South and Southeast Asia. The exhibition explores the story of the Ramayana epic based on the theme of Ramcharitamanas, a 17th century text from India.

The exhibition is divided into seven sections based on the seven chapters of the epic. The flow of the exhibition is as follows: Bala Kanda (Childhood Chapter), Ayodhya Kanda (Ayodhya Chapter), Aranya Kanda (Forest Chapter), Kishkindha Kanda (Meeting the Monkey Army Chapter), Sundara Kanda (Hanuman’s search for Sita Chapter), Lanka Kanda (Battle of Lanka Chapter) and Uttara Kanda (Epilogue). In each section, two or three events will be further identified for storytelling and a special focus on important character will be introduced in the relevant chapter.

As second part of students’ Art tour, they were brought to Singapore Art Museum. They were introduced to different forms and practices of Visual Art in the following 4 exhibitions:

FX Harsono: Testimonies
FX Harsono: Testimonies presents a survey of artwork by one of Indonesia’s foremost contemporary artists. This exhibition traces the shifts in the artist’s strategies of representation: from the ground-breaking conceptual works that re-defined art making during the Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Movement (New Art Movement) of the 1970s; to the politically-charged installations of the 1990s; to the artist’s recent investigations into issues of self, identity and personal histories.

Seeing the Kites Again
In 2008, Chinese artist Wu Guanzhong donated 113 of his important works to the National Heritage Board, Singapore. Showcasing 22 paintings from the donation, Seeing the Kites Again is an exhibition inspired by Wu’s metaphor of the kite. Since the 1960s, Wu Guanzhong has produced a great number of works, based on his personal recollections. These works are centred around his home in the South of China, his childhood, as well as the villages and towns he has been to.

Earth and Water: Mapping Art in Southeast Asia
The diverse region of Southeast Asia is home to approximately 500 million people. The history and society of Southeast Asia have been shaped by a confluence of geographical, historical and cultural forces. With exhibits drawn from the Singapore Art Museum’s permanent collection, the theme of 'Earth and Water' conjoins two of the basic elements of life with the Mainland and the Archipelago. These works by the region's best known artists further offer multiple manifestations of life, society and traditions in Southeast Asia.

Classic Contemporary: Contemporary Southeast Asian Art from the Singapore Art Museum Collection
This accessible and quirky exhibition aims to introduce new audiences to the ideas and art forms of contemporary art. A stellar cast of painting, sculpture, video, photography, performance art from across Southeast Asia are brought together and given the red-carpet treatment, and the whole of the SAM 8Q building is transformed into a dramatic stage for these stars and icons. This visit is a case-study for students' module on Design History & Culture where they get to know the ancient culture and history of Egypt, an insight to the Egyptian’s attitude to life and the afterlife, and the preparations they made to ensure their transition from earthly existence to immortality.

With 230 artefacts spanning from 4000 BCE to 950 CE, the exhibition endeavours to place tomb objects in their social, religious and artistic context, demonstrating the diversity and adaptability of an art that has prevailed both time and space.

Collaging our 'Neighbourhood' with P2

Peiying Primary School

Pupils learned techniques of Collage (tearing and pasting) in this course with understanding of Shape and Part-Whole model in creating Artwork on subject of ‘buildings’ based on theme of ‘My Neighbourhood’.

They were given a context on Collage with stimuli of pictures on our local neighbourhood. They built up their colourful buildings with torn-out shapes before detailing them with oil-pastel.

Composition skills with understanding of background and perspective were taught in ensuring well-composed final-work.

This exhibition showcases the fruition of its various Art programmes from all levels, particularly featuring its Artist-in-school project as supported by National Arts Council as led by artist/art educator Lau Sheow Tong.

The Artwork exhibited are outstanding pieces from both pupils and teachers. Pupils’ works are selected based on merits of their techniques and ideas with relevance to various attempted themes such as ‘Still Life on Fruits’, ‘My Buildings’, ‘Created Creatures’ etc. As for teachers’ work, they are the results of their hands-on creation from the 'Still Life' Art workshop. Work from Sheow Tong are based on his latest collection on delectable sweet food, ‘Sweetalicious’.

It is a celebration of its whole-school-approach in Art education where pupils and teachers from all levels are involved in cultivating a vibrant Art culture through the visual Art.

Mixed Media Art Course (NAC-AEP) for Sec.3

In this course, students are taught to combine different media such as dye, acrylic paint and Collage to create mixed media Art in abstract and semi-abstract forms.

As an introduction, they were exposed to abstract work by artists like Jackson Pollock and Wassily Kandinsky on Action Painting and Abstract Expressionism. Their hands-on work were based on themes of 'Washing', 'My Room' and 'Jewellery'.

Local artists' work by Goh Beng Kwan and Thomas Yeo were then introduced with them exploring Collage in mixed media. Themes like 'Shells' and 'Florals' were explored with their creation of semi-abstract work.

3D mixed media work is also covered with reference to Frank Stella's work in Maximalist Style. Students have explored semi-3D formation with use of their created 2D abstract work and some construction paper. They were worknig on ideas of 'Speed' and 'Dynamics' from theme of 'Sports'.

Teachers' Workshop 'Still Life'

In this brief workshop, teachers are informed of what is Still Life. A brief history of Still Life is introduced from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period to present 21th century. Art movements of Realism, Impressionism and Cubism are highlighted.

Artists featured in this workshop include Juan Sánchez Cotán, Paul Cezanne and Fernand Léger. From these artists’ styles, teachers embarked on hands-on with both representational and semi-representational forms of Still Life on theme of ‘Fruits’.

Teachers also shared on various methodologies and approaches of bringing these learnings to classroom teaching.

This series of lessons has exposed students to various Artists and Art Styles.

Local artists selected for referencing are Georgette Chen (Nanyang Art Style), Thomas Yeo(Abstract Mixed Media) and Justin Lee (Pop Art) where their work are compared and contrasted with international artists such as Paul Cezanne (Post-impressionism), Jackson Pollock (Abstract Expressionism) and Andy Warhol (Pop Art).

They have also been introduced to interpretation of artwork according to the Feldman's 4 stages: Description; Analysis; Interpretation; Evaluation.

Throughout the lessons, students are divided into groups where they get to discuss, debate and interprete artwork introduced. They also have the opportunities to present their findings and outcomes as a contest.

- Mixed Media Art with Recycled Materials @ Zhong Hua Primary School

Pupils at Zhong Hua Primary School are given an introduction to Mixed Media Art using Recycled Materials. They were introduced to Frank Stella's work in 3D abstract form. From his relief forms in maximalist style, the pupils adapted his work to create semi-abstract 3D work based on theme of Our Country, Our Cityscape!

Pupils have included the HDB flats, The Esplanade, Singapore Flyer and other prominent high-rise buildings of our city in their creations. They experimented with different recycled materials to effect 3D formations in Stella's typical bright and varied colours with maximalist details and patterns.

They have created brilliant colourful cityscapes of ours in semi-abstract forms.

Introduction to Fashion Design

- An Elective Module for Sec 3 NA/NT Students @ Tampines Secondary School

This is an introductory course specially customised as an NA/NT module for sec 3 students who would pursue such a career path or any other comparable design careers. It is a highly applicable course with hands-on in design of garments and exposure to the local fashion industry.

Students were taught figure drawing of human models and sketching of subjects for garment design. Next, they applied their ideas and concepts of various subjects chosen onto the human figures. Techniques of Manipulation and Stylization have been applied to realise the final designs. Various illustrative media were utilised in visualising their ideas.

They were also exposed to the local fashion industry with case studies of bridal couturier Silverlining and FrontRow’s commitment to promotion of local up-and-coming new fashion designers.

Objectives:
Students will be exposed to local context of fashion industry and informed of the development of fashion trend and its industry for the last 70 years.
Students will be taught sketching techniques on Figure Drawing and design techniques as inspired from various sources such as nature, architecture etc.
Students will be able to illustrate, stylise and compose their designs as a project.
Students will get first-hand exposure to the fashion industry from the industry tour.
Students will be able to present, express and review their final project.

Chief Trainer (Composite Art & Design)

Sheow Tong is an experienced Art and Design trainer with an extensive track record in his field of expertise. He has taught Art and Design in both primary and secondary schools and he is currently lecturing part-time at Temasek Polytechnic (Design Integrated Studies) and First Media Design School on various design modules.

He has established Composite Art & Design which runs various courses on Art & Design for both students and teachers. Trigger Creations is its series of Art educational programmes targeted for MOE schools as endorsed by National Arts Council (NAC).
As a teachers’ trainer with World Prime Arts Education, he has conducted various Art workshops specially tailored for teachers from MOE such as Art Interpretation for Study of Visual Arts, Fashion Illustration and Mixed Media Painting.

He holds a Master in Fine Arts from LaSalle College of the Arts (validated by Open University, UK), a Post-graduate Diploma in Education from National Institute of Education and a Bachelor in Arts from National University of Singapore.

Lim Jit Hwang is the founder and design consultant of Silverlining Bridal Couture which is established in 2002. It is a fine bridal consultancy firm which specialises in made-to-measure dresses and suits for to-be-wed clients. Currently, he is also lecturing part-time at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts on Design Communication Studies. Prior to this, he was a full-time lecturer with its design department.

He graduated with a degree in Visual Arts and Communications from Curtin University of Technology.

Life Drawing @ Fort Canning

A Learning Journey on Life Drawing

This workshop takes students to a learning journey on Life Drawing at Fort Canning Park.
It is specially designed for adults who have a keen interest in on-the-spot sketching and drawing of nature, scenery and architecture.

It is also a Heritage-cum-Art camp where students will be guided to a trail of Fort Canning Park with introduction of its history and culture amid the interesting architecture and lavish greenery.

In this workshop, students will be informed of basic perspective drawing and composition techniques in composing interesting outdoor life drawing pictures. Media used will be dry materials which are quick-and-easy for outdoor sketching such as pencils, charcoal and colour pencils.

There are 4 sessions (4 x 3hrs) to this workshop:
- Introduction & Mastery of Dry Media (Pencils/Charcoal/Colour Pencils)
- Introductory Trail and Basic Sketching at Fort Canning Park
- Perspective Drawing & Composition of Pictures
- Life Drawing of Composed Pictures at Fort Canning Park

'Paper' Art

‘Paper’ Art introduces pupils to artworks (both 2D & 3D) that are made of paper.
They will be experiencing creation of ‘paper’ Artwork mainly in Collage and simple Paper Sculpture.
Elements of Art (EOA) are emphasized in this programme:
Specifically Shapes, Colours and Texture.

Pupils will start on their Art making with application of EOA in mind, specifically Shapes, Colours and Texture. They will start with elementary Art-form on Collage utilizing idea of Shapes and Colours. Texture will be explored at the next level with experimentation of simple Paper Sculpture.

As a highlight to the programme, pupils will experience group-work utilizing both Collage and Paper Sculpture to create their final work with given themes.
In evaluation stage, they will discuss and ‘talk about’ their creations (both individual and group-work) using Shapes, Colours and Texture with appropriate descriptive terms for each component.

*10 hrs for 5 sessions.

Local Artists & Art Styles

This series of lessons will expose students to Local Artists and Art Styles.
The selected artists are:
Liu Kang and Georgette Chen (Nanyang Art Style)
Thomas Yeo and Goh Beng Kwan (Abstract Expressionism)
Justin Lee and Lau Sheow Tong (Pop/Naive Art)

They will be introduced to interpretation and evaluation of their work according to the 4 stages: Description; Analysis; Interpretation; Evaluation.
Hands-on with reference to their respective Art styles will be experienced with feasible materials used (Collage, Mixed Media, Digital Art) and relevant themes selected.
Finally in stage of evaluation, students will express their opinions and evaluate their learnings on the different Art Styles.
They will compare and contrast these styles with reference to their hands-on.

Pop Art - A Contemporary Creation

There are 4 sessions to Pop Art – A Contemporary Creation. Students will be exposed to the contextual background, style and characteristics of Pop Art. Both international and local Pop Art contexts will be covered. They will also experience the making of Pop Art with use of appropriate media and references to artists’ work.

Students will be briefly introduced to the origin, movement and style of Pop Art.

Their work will be discussed and compared.

Students will produce Pop Artwork with reference to artists’ style and work. Media explored and used will be Collage or digital illustration using Photoshop as appropriate.

Students will be led to compare and contrast their work with those from the artists introduced. They will also explore possibilities of group-work such as collaging their work with noted theme and appropriate settings.

Mixed Media Painting

In Mixed Media Painting, students will be taught on the collaborative use of different media like dye, acrylic, Collage and scrap-materials.
It taps on the nature of each medium and the creative inputs of students in forming the Mixed Media Painting.

Demonstration and hands-on will be experienced with ‘mixing’ of media and basic composition of picture. Accidental effects will also be realized with students’ experimentation of the media and their various effects.

Elements of Art and Principles of Design will be infused in the lessons to enable a composed Mixed Media Painting which is abstract or semi-abstract.
